Drummers like to hit things with sticks! And to my knowledge no one has created an MPE capable surface for this (short of the amazing Marimba Lumina project).
Is a thicker, more bouncy pad - perhaps made from neoprene, possible?

Too toyish. And too small and not bouncy or tough enough.
MPE style positional sensitivity and aftertouch have huge potential for drummers. And very few if any midi drum devices do it well.
But it’s how most acoustic percussion instruments actually work! There are lot of little details in where and how you hit something… A conga for instance, hang drum, or a jazz ride cymbal…
And surface wise, neoprene or thicker rubber would be better.
